Discover the authentic Arthurian legend

Author Scott Telek describes what’s special about The Swithen series.

The Swithen is a 25-novel series that remains completely faithful to the Arthurian legend as laid down between the years of 1136-1485. Five of those novels are out now, taking us from the birth of Merlin to Arthur’s coronation as king. The rule of this series is that it cannot change anything from the original Medieval sources, it can only add or enhance scenes and characters to make it work better as an overall narrative.

Book 1: A Man of Our Kind

The Arthurian legend begins here, with the story of Merlin’s birth set against the tale of Tyrant King Vortigern’s driving Britain into ruin. Elements of horror give way to surprising moments of mother-son tenderness as the greatest wizard of all time is born.

“I absolutely loved it. It is told so well that I only put this book down when I absolutely needed to so that I could get some sleep.”
Katinka, Goodreads review

“I don’t want to spoil the plot… But I do want to say is how very powerful the end of the novel is. The conversations between [Merlin] and his mother on [his moral character] are the culmination of the book and bring the story to a powerful close. I only wished it was longer.”

Book 2: The Sons of Constance

Meet kings Vortiger, Pendragon and finally Uther, who will go on to become the father of Arthur. Merlin serves them all, but none of them know whether they are in control, or are just unwitting pawns of the all-seeing wizard.

“What is fascinating about the novel is not the plot, but the psychology of the characters as the chain of events unfolds. If you weren’t fascinated by how Telek depicted Merlin in the first novel, I guarantee you will be here.

Merlin is the star of the novel, although the depiction of the three kings who precede Arthur are, in my opinion, Telek’s triumph simply because they have been sketchy and not fully detailed in most Arthurian works to date.

“What sets the book apart is the complex interplay amongst all the characters and the way their high-stakes situations play out against each other.

If you make it through this book, you will be hooked for the series. It leaves you in a spot where the story is poised to explode, which gives the exciting feeling that as gripping as this series has been, it’s just getting started.”

Book 4: The Flower of Chivalry

No one knows who Arthur is – least of all himself. Through his idyllic childhood in the forests that surround his home, the future King Arthur learns to protect and care for a friend that is shunned by all others. Emboldened by his success, Arthur drifts into overconfidence, and makes a disastrous mistake that threatens to end his adventures—and his life—before they’ve even begun.

“I don’t think anyone has as thoroughly and convincingly imagined Arthur’s childhood as Scott Telek has done. This book far surpasses T. H. White’s The Sword in the Stone for being far more serious and far better thought out.”

Book 5: Wonderly Wroth

Arthur has pulled the sword from the stone—but he’s not king yet. A confused fourteen-year-old from a small town, Arthur suddenly finds himself considered the foretold king of all Britain. Put into training with Sir Ulfius and Sir Bretel, Arthur is drawn into the close friendship the knights share. But one of them has a secret—a secret so dark and explosive it throws the formidable knights into a deadly feud, with the future king caught in their battle.

“I have never related so much with Arthur’s character until now. Scott Telek really shines in his characterization here. He is afraid, lost. He is a boy of fourteen years old that just found out he is destined to be the next king of Britain, found out that his parents aren’t his real parents and, of course, he felt like his world is all upside down. This Arthur is much more relatable than other versions, because in this one he is a human person, who was his own flaws.”
